THE FUTURE OF GAMING: 20 YEARS INTO THE FUTURE

Gaming grows every year, new innovation leads to new ways to play, and new ways to play lead to new games to play. If we look back at gaming over the past 20 years, it has received a substantial increase in hardware and software sales, making the gaming industry worth billions of dollars. This has all been led by an industry that strives itself on entertainment, creating experiences that even Hollywood fail to achieve. But in the end it all boils down technology, as without it, we would not be at the pinnacle of gaming as we are today, and it’s only going to get bigger and better in the future.

Technology leads gaming, it is the driving force behind every aspect of the industry. From the moment a new video game is revealed, to the final moments in which the credits roll, technology is behind it all. We have gone from playing Super Mario Bros on our classic tube television sets, to streaming our PS4 games over LTE networks to our smartphones. We have eliminated wires and plugs, increased our internet, and created new ways to play.

We can now watch other people around the world playing games thanks to streaming services like YouTube Gaming and Twitch. We can even take control of a friend’s game on the other side of the world and help him through a tough spot. All this while we are sitting in a chat party with friends and enjoying a good old gaming session. This would not be possible if we just accepted wires and tube televisions, and companies and developers did not strive to create a better future for gaming.
Instead of going out and buying physical copies of games, we now download them, eliminating the trip to the mall, and the carbon footprint behind physical production. Most titles now pre-load onto our system, making them available for us the second they are released. We are spoilt, but we pay for these features, and it comes with the territory of today’s hardware.

The Future of Gaming

But enough about today’s world, what about in 20 years time? We are talking about 2 console generations down the line, where the internet will be faster, hardware will be more powerful, and life will be controlled less by what we do, and more by what we own.
Thanks to the internet, everything we do is so easier and faster and gaming will surely evolve into a bigger spectrum as the internet moves in a faster, more reliable direction. Faster internet means quicker game downloads, faster updates, seamless streaming, cloud processing, and larger servers.

We will reach a stage where we will no longer be installing discs, downloading content, and even running it off any hardware. We will just open an app, choose a game, and stream it directly to our devices. No hardware power needed. This process will be powered by the cloud where all rendering will take place over the internet and we can sit back and enjoy our games without the need to download anything. We are talking about an age where one payment will secure an entire game that you can play instantly wherever you are, no matter what hardware you have available.

Virtual Reality

The idea of gaming is to immerse yourself in a world that is not possible, be it a city under the sea, a battle between light and darkness, or even a goalkeeper during the FIFA world cup. Virtual Reality makes that possible, it is a headset that packs all the abilities to make this possible. You become part of the game as you hear and see (and even smell) everything around you in a whole new perspective.
We anticipate that VR will become something that takes over usual lounge gaming session, where you will now place a VR set over your head, and disappear for a few hours. We already see VR sets like the PlayStation Virtual Reality set, and Oculus Rift becoming increasingly popular, and we will see them take over the industry as they pave the way for future hardware additions in the next generation of gaming.

Visual Style

With the increase of hardware and the improvement of engines that power these video games, we are already seeing spectacular visual experiences in games. The future will hold much more in store as we reach next to real-life visuals. Imagine a game that is so photo-realistic that you cannot tell it apart from reality? That is what we expect to experience in the next coming generations of gaming where one game would have more polygons in it than every single title released over a generation of games.

Holographic

We also have the creation of holographic gaming, where a game would be brought to life in your living room thanks to holographic projections. You would just put on a pair of glasses, and your entire living space would shift reality. Gone are over-priced TV screens, now you just project a game through your lenses onto a wall and play.
In a nutshell gaming will go nowhere unless the hardware that powers it changes. It is all about new ways to play, the improvement of internet infrastructure, and the research of ways to make gaming a seamless, cordless, and a hassle-free experience. All we can say is we’re excited to be part of that future.

Is Facebook too powerful?

The problem is that the way Facebook marketed itself to consumers back in 2008, is not how it is now. (Source: Getty) Three hours and 27 minutes into Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony before the Senate, senator Dan Sullivan pressed him on the question – is  Facebook  too powerful? It’s a sentiment reflected by the House of Lords here in the UK, which has called on the Competition and Markets Authority to launch a study into  Google  and Facebook’s “dysfunctional and opaque” digital advertising market. Facebook can be an extraordinarily useful tool – it has connected people and ideas around the world like nothing before. But it is exactly this magnitude which is becoming a problem. A lack of understanding on the part of politicians and consumers alike about what Facebook is, what it does, and how it works means that it hasn’t been regulated like other behemoths in the communications world. This lack of regulation has allowed Facebook to become huge. Self-...
